Lobster Roll Rumble 2013 (Los Angeles, CA)

It was the middle of the week, and I had tickets to a fantastic food event: The Lobster Roll Rumble!  This is an event that had been held on the East Coast for four years, but this year they came to L.A.  Great!

Here is everything we had to eat including the ten lobster roll contenders, six booths of desserts, salads, and sides, plus the music, swag, and so much more!

Here is how we were greeted to the space.  I was getting excited…  🙂

I loved the gorgeous decorations, especially the paper lantern cluster.  You may notice a projected image on the wall behind it.  There was a fun projector that displayed the Instagram photos that the guests tagged #lobsterrumble.  More on that later…

This was the dessert area before all heck broke loose!  Each contender had their own table, so let’s take a closer look!

Here is the program with all of the contenders, desserts, and more.  We chose to go out of order, to avoid the long lines.  However, I’ll give it to you in order because it’ll be simpler that way!

I’m going to let the pictures do the talking, and just list them all with a comment or two for each.  Also, I hope you understand that we we were doing some active eating (walking around, standing in lines, eating, repeating, etc.), so sometimes I forgot to snap a photo before digging in!

Oops…  Don’t mind the bite I took before digging in!  It was one of the best looking ones, in my opinion, even though this photo does it no justice at all.

The largest chunks of lobster by far!

Oops… almost got all the way through that one before snapping a photo!  Here’s their recipe if you are interested in making your own.  Believe me, it’s worth it!

Lightly dressed and focused on the lobster.  Delicious!

One of the best, and just overflowing with lobster!

This was the eventual winner of the night and the line was endless throughout almost the whole event!

7. Old Port Lobster Shack

Here’s a shot of one of the voting boxes.  My partner-in-crime voted for this one!  There’s a close-up later…

8. Strand House

My favorite!  Perfectly toasted bread and just what I wanted in a lobster roll.  🙂

So blurry, but you can see how delicious it was, right?  :

Another favorite, and I loved the presentation of the split bread stuffed to the brim with lobster on a little bamboo plate.

Whew, and that was the whole list of contenders!  So you have an idea of how we ate our lobster rolls, there were tables set up around the periphery.  We would grab a couple of rolls and sit down to sample them.  The is the Old Port Lobster Shack close-up below that I promised.  🙂

In addition to the ten contenders, we had some other delicious savory items to sample.

Salads & Sides

Honestly, we didn’t pay much attention to these because we had so much to focus on, like the lobster rolls and…

Ridiculously blurry!

…dessert!!!  I was really excited because there were some really delicious looking sweets.  🙂

I had eaten some of their desserts at the L.A. Street Food Fest, so I was familiar with delicious sweets. However, that little brown square, which the guy called a “brown blondie” was something special that I never tried before!  That’s a complete favorite.

I was REALLY looking forward to trying anything from this shop because the desserts had been popping up all over the L.A. food scene as the new things to try.

Here is a close-up of the three (from left to right):

  1. The famous creme caramel.  Just wow!  This must be what dessert in heaven tastes like.
  2. It was something fall-inspired, possibly pumpkin?
  3. Ube, an upside-down ube pie.

I actually had seconds of #1 and #3 because they were so amazing!

Cookies, lemon meringue pie, and more.  It’s a good thing my dessert stomach was still not completely full!

A couple of mini churro ice cream sandwiches: one with vanilla ice cream and one with horchata ice cream!

These were staring me in the face for practically the entire night.  Sooo delicious and there was an unexpected light cream filling.  I almost sprang for seconds, but they were so huge that I had to pass.  Next time!

Everything else

This was a fun little feature where you could get your Instagram picture printed if you tagged it with #LobsterRumble.

And remember that projection from above?  It was projected to everyone in the room!  See my little icon on the bottom right?

And this one too!

Also, I should mention that the entire middle of the room was a bar with Stella Artois, Tequila Patron, Martin Codax, and more!  I was designated driver though, so it was regular water for me.  🙂

Let’s not forget the swag bag that we came back with.  Lots of goodies here!

Overall, it was a great time and I would love to go back again next year!
