Ditmas Kitchen (Los Angeles, CA)

I had been hearing about Ditmas Kitchen for a while now, and I had never eaten at a kosher restaurant before.  Also, I knew that the chef was a former contestant on Top Chef, so I was interested in seeing what all the buzz was about.  🙂

It ended up being a free night, so a bunch of us headed out to try it!

I like how it looked like a regular house just chilling in the middle of Pico!

The menu is small, but I already heard a bunch of good things about several of the menu items!

For example, I knew that I wanted to try out the Kale Caesar salad after reading reviews.  It was extraordinary because it was dressed just right.  Also, I typically dislike the lemony dressings that are usually paired with kale, so this was a welcome change!  Also, you may not be able to tell how large this is, but it was enormous!

It was really, really dark, but I snapped a few pictures to show off the ambiance.  Nice and homey, to match the outside!

This was the Tuna Carpaccio that my guy had as a starter.  What a pretty little dish!

The Steak Tartare adorned with a quail egg and pickled mustard.  Pickled mustard!

The Short Rib was delicious and beautiful!

To share, we had the Wild Mushrooms side dish.  Gorgeous mushrooms cooked just perfectly!

A couple of people ordered the Spaghetti Primavera.  The ribbons of pasta were delicious!

I ordered the Poultry, which was a roast chicken with gnocchi.  It was divine!  And of course, it was large so I shared with everyone around the table.  🙂

By the way, did you notice the top of the plate?  I love that it there is a reminder of what I am eating.  🙂

Of course, the Salmon at the top of the post was gorgeous and really one of the stars of the menu!

The table also shared the Kennebec Fries, which were just a bit bland for some.

On the other hand, I heard the Vidalia Onion Rounds (or onion rings) were fantastic.  So true!

For dessert, we ordered the Lemon Meringue dessert.

Then, the butterscotch pudding with crispy pistachios and a crispy mint leaf, which I had heard good things about.  Sorry for the blurry picture!

And lastly, something that was chocolate-y maybe?  I can’t remember, but it looks almost like a deconstructed s’more.  🙂

All in all, we had a great time!  Basically, we were very impressed with the starters and the entrees, with our least favorite part of the meal being the fries and desserts.  I’ll get to the rundown now:

  • Must Try’s:  Kale Caesar, Vidalia onion rounds, Poultry (Roast Chicken), Short Rib, Salmon
  • Worth a Try: Tuna Carpaccio, Steak Tartare, Spaghetti Primavera, Wild Mushrooms
    • All of these are really great too, but just a smidge under the Must Try’s  🙂
  • Pass: Kennebec fries, desserts

It was a delicious meal in a comfortable, homey atmosphere.  It was like having dinner at my grandmother’s house… if she was a former Top Chef!

Have you ever tried a kosher restaurant before?
