Honduras Kitchen (Long Beach, CA)

On a whim, I purchased a Groupon for a restaurant called Honduras Kitchen because:

  1. I am an adventurous eater
  2. I love a good deal!
I am so glad we went because it is such a hidden gem.  Easily, this is one of my favorite new restaurants and there are so many dishes to try!  Here are our delectable dishes from that day.  ๐Ÿ™‚
Find out all about this delicious chicken below!

Like I said, it is almost a hole in the wall, located just west of Retro Row.  They did have some fun chalkboard signs outside, but I would change the sign if I were them…

As soon as you walk inside, the bar on the right lets you know that you’re going to have a good time.  ๐Ÿ™‚

We sat down to peruse the menu and were served the BEST chips and salsa ever.  Usually, I skip chips and salsa, but the Honduran salsa and cheese on top are delicious.  Really, a nice surprise!  We were very, very tempted to get seconds, but judging from the chips, we were in a for a delicious ride!

We had a pretty difficult time choosing what to order, but the waitress was really great about making suggestions for us.  I mean, look at the size of this menu!  We will have lots to choose from for future visits.  ๐Ÿ™‚

When the waitress suggested one of their Frescos Naturales, we had a hard time choosing…  So she gave us samples of each one!  From the top, going clockwise, the flavors were Yellow Cherry, Passionfruit, Guanabana, and Tamarindo.  We went with…

Passionfruit!  My second favorite was the Tamarindo, but really all of them are worth trying.

After ordering, I took a quick peek around.  In addition to the room on the right, there is another room on the left.

I read that there is sometimes dancing at night, which explains the lack of decorations.  At a moment’s notice, they can clear the floor to get their groove on!

Our starters were the traditional Baleadas, which are “fresh hand made flour tortillas with refried beans, Honduran cream (mantequilla) and grated dry cheese.”  We ordered one plain and one with egg.  We both preferred the plain one!

Based off of just the chips & salsa, the juice, and the appetizers, we could see why they have been written up multiple times.

By the way, the music here was so fun!  Of course, it was in Spanish and completely festive.  It totally got us in the mood to eat.  ๐Ÿ™‚

For the main event, we ordered the Pollo Frito, a Honduran fried chicken.  This is easily in our top 3 fried chickens of all time.  Somehow, the chicken is crispy and not oily, while staying moist and flavorful on the inside.  I am practically drooling just describing it!  To accompany it, there were lots of goodies, like chimol (Honduran salsa), fried plantains, and pickles.  Delicious!

Other entree was the Arroz Con Pollo.  It was yellow rice with shredded chicken, served with bread and salad.  I’m not sure why the bread was served with it, but I’m not complaining.  ๐Ÿ™‚  The arroz con pollo was pretty good, but we will probably skip it next time, just so we can try another delicious dish!

I thought it was really, really great.  My guy loved it so much that he wanted to go back the next day for more chicken.  ๐Ÿ™‚  In fact, we want to take my family there because we hardly ever get the chance to treat them to a restaurant that none of them have heard of before.  Yes, that’s what you get in a family of foodies.  ๐Ÿ™‚

Have you ever had Honduran food before?  What else should I try when I go back?
