Spago (Beverly Hills, CA)

Okay, so this is a mess of a post.  I sat down to write this excitedly because I had SO many things to share from Spago: a wonderful amuse bouche, a beautiful bread basket, five tasty appetizers, five delicious entrees, two delectable side dishes, and three gorgeous desserts.  And then the worst thing happened…  I accidentally deleted every single picture from my camera.  And yes, I brought my nice camera and captured all of the dishes from different angles just to show you and keep the moments from my mom’s birthday.  Now, they are all gone.  🙁

So yes, I have committed my first REAL blunder as a food blogger, besides all of the terribly lit photos I had at the beginning.  However, I do have a few good things to share in this post!

First of all, we chose several items from the menu, all of which were fantastic.  After our last outing at Spago over a year ago, we were actually very disappointed.  The food was not a great change, and it took over three hours even though we only ordered appetizers and entrees.  We skipped dessert just so we could go home!  Yes, even though we had spent Mother’s Day, my mom’s birthday, and several dinners throughout the year, we avoided going back to the “new” Spago until today.

…And it totally redeemed itself!

Here are the dishes we ordered, all of which were fantastic:

  • Two:
    • Handmade Agnolotti, English Peas, Mascarpone, Parmesan
    • Farfalle Pasta with Maine Lobster, Spring Onions, Micro Basil
    • Fettuccine Pasta, Wild Oregon Porcini Mushrooms, Baby Asparagus
    • Italian Summer Truffles (Cheese Pizza)
  • Three:
    • Roasted Maine Monkfish, Bacon, English Peas, Wild Oregon Morel Mushrooms
    • Slow Roasted Wild Alaskan King Salmon, Port-Ginger Reduction, Spinach, Baby kennel Purèe
    • Crispy Scale Black Bass, Littleneck Clams, Miso “Sand,” Herb Coulis
    • Grilled Sonoma Lamb Rack, Harissa Aioli, Falafel “Macaroons,” Eggplant “Caviar”
    • Braised Beef Short Ribs, horseradish Sphere, Pickled Mustard Seeds, Smoked Bone Marrow
  • From the Garden
    • Farmer’s Market Sweet English Peas, Snap Peas, Feta Cheese, Pea Tendrils
    • Smoked Fingerling Potato Purée, Crème Fraîche
  • Desserts:
    • Three that I can’t remember the description of…

I’m so upset that I cannot share any of those dishes.  However, I can share one of the fantastic bottles of wine that we celebrated with!

The decor is much more muted than before, and the patio is beautiful on a nice day.

We were seated inside with the tree and a ton of decanters.  Just what our wine needed!

I did take a picture of our amuse bouche before taking out my camera, so I could at least share this with you.  Beautiful plating and such a wonderful dish.  I always love the soups they serve.  Yum!

Well, now I learned my lesson about double-checking that I actually have my pictures downloaded before I delete them.  Argh!

At least now we gave the restaurant a second chance, and we may not let nearly as much time slip by before visiting again.  🙂

Have you ever gone back to a restaurant for a “second chance” and been pleasantly surprised?
