Pie-Not (Costa Mesa, CA)

Here’s the problem with Pie-Not…  I’m a pie fiend.  I just love it, so there’s no way that I can be objective.  I can be very picky about crust and filling, but when I like a pie… I LOVE IT.  So, I decided to take my guy along so I could have a second (less black-and-white) opinion.  However, by the end of our meal, we were both fans and planning our second trip.  🙂

First of all, Pie-Not makes Australian-style meat and vegetarian pies, which I hadn’t eaten before.  I’m always game to try new things, especially one that has on my “To Eat” list for a while!

The menu has a fun little tidbit on it…you are supposed to use your hands if you are a “Piehard” fan!

The pies are in a huge (and shiny) display, with lots and lots of choices.  Mmmm!

The dessert display is smaller, but filled with tantalizing treats!

Now, for the pies we selected…

Dog’s Eye
the classic aussie meat pie: ground angus with minced onions & garlic in a tomato worcestershire style gravy

So, we followed the instructions and popped it out of the tin, ready to eat!  Note, these are about the size of a hamburger, so they’re not overwhelmingly big.

Once you start eating it with all of the buttery, flaky crust giving way to the meaty filling, it’s pretty hard to put down.  Yet, I made the sacrifice to show you the deliciousness.

…and the delicious interior!

Drover

I have never eaten a shepherd’s pie with my hands, but that’s pretty much what I did!  I loved the topping, and it was probably my favorite pie of the three.

And then it was time for dessert!

The Lamington
the traditional & unique aussie dessert, butter sponge cake cubed & rolled in chocolate icing & dusted w/ desiccated coconut

Here is a shot of the inside, and I pretty much gobbled up my half in a few seconds.  Light and delicious, with a perfect amount of chocolate icing and coconut!

What a Lemon
crushed tea biscuit slice w/ fresh lemon rind & desiccated coconut finished w/ a freshly squeezed lemon juice icing

A super sweet dessert, which I showed in the dessert display.  It’s actually VERY sweet, so it’s a good thing they cut it into 4 equal triangles.

I’m really looking forward to trying the vegetable and lamb versions next time, but I’ll have to get there early before they run out!
